So to help you understand exactly how the process here works at Ron Skinner & Sons, and to clear up any confusion, we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions. This list is by no means exhaustive, so if you have any questions which have not been addressed on this page, please do not hesitate to call one of our friendly customer service representatives who will be happy to help you out.
V5’s (Logbooks)
I’ve bought a used car, so when will I receive my new V5?
You will receive part of the V5 which enables you to tax your vehicle upon collection of your new car. The DVLA will then send you a full V5 registered in your name 4-6 weeks after collection of your new vehicle.
What do I do with the V5 of the car I’m part exchanging?
You will need to bring the full V5 with you when collecting your new vehicle. We will then stamp part 9 of the V5 and hand it back to you so you can send it off to the DVLA. It is your responsibility to do so as the DVLA need to be notified that the vehicle has been sold to a motor trader.
Tax
Do your cars come with road tax?
The vast majority of our second-hand and used cars are supplied without road tax.
How can I tax my new vehicle?
You can tax your new vehicle at any Post Office counter.
Can I tax my new car online?
You cannot currently tax your new car online as you need to have the V5 (logbook) registered in your name.
What do I need to tax my car at the Post Office?
You will need part of the V5 (logbook) and the insurance Cover Note. You will also require the money to pay for the road tax.
What about the tax on my part exchange?
You can take any remaining tax from your part exchange and reclaim it from the DVLA.
My current vehicle is registered disabled. Can I tax my new car as disabled at the Post Office?
Yes – you can tax the new vehicle as disabled at the post office, however you will need to let us know so we can provide you with the full V5 for you to be able to tax the vehicle. You will also need your insurance cover note along with your signed exemption certificate.
Payment
What methods of payment are accepted at Ron Skinner & Sons Ltd?
We accept the following payments:
- Bankers Draft
- Building Society Cheque (payable to Ron Skinner & Sons Ltd)
- Debit Card
- Credit card (subject to a surcharge of 2.5%)
- BACS Payments
- CHAPS Payments
- Cash up to £2,000
NB:
- We do not accept American Express Credit Cards or Personal Cheques.
Personalised Number Plate Transfers
Can you transfer my personalised number plate to my new car?
Yes - we can transfer your number onto your new vehicle, although you will need to provide the following items:
- Signed V5 (logbook) for the current vehicle your personalised plate is on;
- Valid MOT for the vehicle the personalised plate is on (if required);
- Details of the vehicle tax expiry date and serial number;
- DVLA fee;
- We also need you to sign the V5 for the new vehicle along with the DVLA’s cherished retention form.
Can you put my personalised number plate on retention for me?
Yes - we can place your personalised number on retention for you, although you will need to provide the following items:
- Signed V5 (logbook) for your current vehicle your personalised plate is on;
- Valid MOT for the vehicle the personalised plate is on (if required);
- Details of the vehicle tax and expiry date and serial number;
- DVLA fee;
- We also need you to sign the V5 for the new vehicle along with the DVLA’s cherished retention form.
Part Exchange
Do you accept part exchange when buying used cars?
Yes we do accept part exchange; however, as no two cars are the same we need to view your car before we are able to offer you the best possible price. For this reason we are unable to offer valuations or ‘rough guides’ over the telephone or by e-mail. Once we have viewed your vehicle we will give you a written valuation which is valid for 7 days.
